Summer Staycation at the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Miami

This has definitely been the summer of staycations for us & I’ve loved every second of it! Traveling with an active and curious baby has its challenges, especially on a flight, so anywhere that we can go locally and still feel like we’re on vacation is ideal for us right now. When the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove reached out and asked if we wanted to come stay with them for a weekend, obviously I said “HECK YES!” It was only an hour drive for us and we truly did feel like we were somewhere else entirely! I’m a native Floridian and actually didn’t really know anything about Coconut Grove until spending a weekend there. Keep reading to see how we spent our weekend exploring the Mayfair and a little slice of Miami.

Upon walking into the Mayfair Hotel & Spa, I was truly taken aback by the architecture and design – it’s so beautifully different than any hotel I’ve ever come across! The decor gave off a tranquil vibe and there were a lot of Gaudi-esque and open-air features that reminded me of our trip to Spain a few years ago. We were given keys to our suite, which we wanted to check out and get situated in immediately!

If anyone has stayed in a hotel room with a baby, you know how tricky it can be. We made the mistake of getting a regular sized room on our first trip with Henry and found ourselves in a pitch dark room with white noise playing for two hours twice a day during his naps and then a family bedtime & room quarantine of 7:30pm. After learning that lesson, we always try to get a suite if we can. Our room at the Mayfair was HUGE. An expansive bedroom was adjacent to a living area and a super spacious bathroom. The real showstopper was the big balcony that had a Japanese tub (too bad it was a thousand degrees outside and we couldn’t take advantage of it), a nice seating area and tropical green surroundings. We were able to make the living area Henry’s “room” because it had french doors and black out shades. Since he napped on the way down, we were able to start enjoying Coconut Grove right away.

I know you’re not surprised that our first activity was lunch. I asked for dining recommendations before heading down and Harry’s Pizzeria was on everyone’s list – so I felt it was a good first meal. Well.. everyone was so RIGHT! Harry’s was great & even Henry approved (we gave him pizza for the first time). We ordered the Orange & Radish Salad with grilled chicken and a Margherita Pizza.

After Harry’s, we were feeling a little food coma-ish, so we stopped by Panther Coffee to grab some caffeine. Cold brew for me, cappuccino for husband. We then just walked around and explored Coconut Grove – there were so many cute little streets, shops and restaurants. I definitely didn’t feel like I was in the Miami I’ve always known.

Henry LOVES the pool so we took him up to the rooftop post-nap for a dip. The pool at the Mayfair is stunning. They have cabanas, a full bar with lounge seating, a fireplace and the best view of Miami. Since we were on vacation after all, I had to indulge in a cocktail. I went for the watermelon + cilantro margarita and it was ALLLL the heart eyes!

After a quick swim, we got ready for dinner and ended up at Lokal for burgers. I had “The Lokal” which was a Florida grass-fed burger with a homemade honey mustard using local honey, melted jack cheese, Florida tomatoes, sliced red onions, arugula, and Homestead avocados. Oh-em-gee was it freakin’ good. Brad had the Royale with Cheese and we split an order of regular fries and sweet potato fries. We had dreams of heading through their secret phone booth into Vicky’s House for one of their incredible looking milkshakes, but we were stuffed and literally just couldn’t. Next time for sure.

After dinner it was time for Henry to hit the hay and we were all pretty tired. We came back to a very welcomed surprise in the room – a bottle of wine and a cheese platter! We were celebrating Brad’s birthday (they didn’t know that) so it was the perfect added touch. We all slept well despite the raging thunderstorm outside and woke up ready for another day. After lounging in our comfy bed for an hour or so, we ate breakfast downstairs at the hotel at Spartico and I had a platter of shaved prosciutto with melon, boiled eggs & olive oil. For some reason it just spoke to me on the menu and I really did enjoy it. We let Henry nap after we all ate and sadly we planned to leave the Mayfair after that. We couldn’t have been happier with our stay and can’t wait to visit again!

I knew I wanted to try a few spots in Wynwood while we were down in Miami. Federal Donuts and Dizengoff (both opened by chef Mike Solomonov) were on my radar and I just had to have them! We got a hummus platter from Dizengoff and a few donuts from Federal to go. My favorites were the hot & fresh outta the fryer Strawberry & Lavender and the Guava Poppy. Definitely worth the detour – even in the rain!

The Mayfair Hotel & Spa and Miami were so good to us. We all felt right at home – which is tough with a baby sometimes. We now consider ourselves “staycay pros” and are looking forward to the next.
